Plywood is obtained by combining three or more thin layers of wood stuck with each other with an adhesive, usually chemical. Every layer of wood, or ply, is usually oriented with its grain running at right angles to the adjacent layer. This is done in order to minimize the shrinkage and increase the strength of the finished plywood. There are many uses of plywood. Most of the plywood is used for construction purposes. They are large, flat big sheets of plywood. The others are used for furniture manufacturing purposes. Furniture such as cupboards, dining tables, sofas, shelves, TV panels, etc. Keep reading to get to know about how is plywood manufactured.
The trees that are used to produce plywood are smaller in diameter than those that are used to make lumber. Almost in all cases, such trees are planted by the plywood companies or sourced from somewhere. These trees are carefully looked after in order to mitigate the damage that can be caused by insects. The plywood is made out of superior quality trees. Only after a long process is final plywood manufactured!
The process of how is plywood manufactured involves a few steps. The steps are listed below-
The log deck is made by piling logs in untracked. They are then loaded on a conveyor belt and forwarded to the debarking machine. The debarked logs are cut into sections of standard measurements that make it best suitable to make plywood that is strong and durable.
The sections that are cut are heated and soaked to soften the wood.
The heated peeler blocks are then transported to the peeler lathe, where they are automatically aligned and fed into the lathe one at a time. The long sheet of veneer that is obtained from this is then processed immediately and is then cut into usable widths. Any defects in the sheets are recognized at this point and are then removed.
The veneers are stacked together according to grade. The sheets are then dried using huge dryers.
The veneers are then stuck together using chemical adhesives. These sheets are then hot pressed tightly. The rough sheets thus obtained are run through saws that trim the sheets and give a final finished product. The final product is then stamped with a trademark and quality logo to inform the buyer about the quality of the sheet.
