What is plywood?
I’m sure you guys have heard of this wood! But what exactly it is? Most of y’all wolf simply just say “ it’s a wood”.
Plywood is one of the most multi-purpose wood products. Plywood bonds resin and wood fiber sheets to form a composite material sold in panels. Normal plywood has face veneers of greater quality than the core veneers. The function of the core layers is to increase the separation between the outer layers where the bending stresses are the highest, improving resistance to bending forces The core layers are the strength of the Plywood.
The plywood history started in 1797 by a man named Samuel Bentham who served as a British Naval engineer who applied for patents that would help him produce veneers. These patents described the idea of using multiple layers of veneer combined with glue to make a thicker piece of wood. That’s exactly how the history of plywood started.
There are over 18 types of plywood distinguished in India based on the type of wood used, application, and process. But there are three basic types namely, MR ply, BWR/ BWP ply, marine ply, softwood ply, hardwood ply, ply, and structural ply. Plywood is also by their grades, namely A, B, C, and D. A grade plywood has a smoother surface and is suitable for making cabinets and furniture. B-grade plywood resembles the A-grade plywood with defects that can be 1 inch across the ply. C grade is an unsanded type with some defects where appearance is not very important. The last grade being D grade resembles C with just the defect unrepairs knots.
It is moisture-proof and suitable for the interiors of the home. This plywood is made with a combination of softwood and hardwood timber or just some variants of softwood timber is to create this plywood. This is the most affordable plywood on the market.
BWR is boiling water resistance and BWP is the boiling waterproof type that is meant for external use. BWP type has a core made of softwood and is external grade plywood. Phenolic resins are in this plywood.
Its quality is better than commercial plywood and is expensive too. They’re commonly used to make ships and boats, industrial uses involve prolonged exposure to water. It is basically waterproof plywood.
This is where plywood has been having its evolution from just plywood to so many varieties of plywood. Moreover, modernization has even happed with plywood in India. However, the finishing is what makes plywood better and over time plywood has had its growth with how the experts have done their work. Also, the biggest modernization in plywood is waterproof plywood. Waterproof plywood is mostly for strength to hold water mostly used in washrooms. Modernization in plywood has the up the game of interiors
